We hand pour our products in our home studio located on the edge of the Barossa Valley, South Australia. We renovated a room at the front of our home in June 2020. We ripped up the carpet, painted the floor with a concrete paint and put shelving against all the walls and found a big pouring bench on marketplace for the middle of the room. We use this to pour, label, gift box and pack orders. We’re quickly outgrowing the room and desperately need another bench to pour and pack on since our recent launch! We have started using the garage and spare room to store stock and supplies. And we have offsite storage for the wax as that comes on a pallet.
I started making candles as a hobby in 2013 when I was on maternity leave with our first child. I had always worked full time and found I need something else outside of ‘mum life’ to focus on. At first, I just sold to friends and family and then started doing a few markets. It wasn’t until our second child arrived in 2015 that I decided to have a go at turning it into my full-time gig instead of a side hustle. In 2019 I was able to go full time and now my partner Garry is also working in the business part time. I also have a few mums who help with odd jobs from home, wicking candles and labelling etc.
We have a flat rate of $9 Australia wide and then FREE SHIPPING when you spend over $99. At this stage we’re not shipping internationally. But we hope to offer this soon.
I use a Soy coconut blend wax which burns beautiful, has amazing hot throw (so it fills your room) and a beautiful white creamy top (so that it looks amazing on stockists’ shelves). I love this wax; it ticks all the boxes. I’ve jumped around between lots of different waxes since I started but I’m set on this one now. Which is why I’ve started purchasing full pallets of it!
ble for your customers.
I found her artwork on Instagram and bought some prints for our daughters’ bedroom and a protea for myself.
I asked for her help with the background colours so I could use them on the wall of the room we were painting. And the rest is history.
We got chatting and hit it off. We have children pretty much the same age and both love colour and being creative.
I started using the protea picture that I bought in the background of pictures of the candles I was taking for the website, and I continually had people asking where the artwork was from.
I started tagging Jess in posts and then I thought it would be amazing to put the artwork ON the candle instead of IN the background.
I sent a message to Jess with this suggestion, and she thought it was a great idea too. So, we made a small batch and they sold out within days. Release after release! And the rest is history! We work together on every little aspect and talk daily and keep going until we’re both 100% happy with each new release before we launch.
We’re both a little OCD so it can be a bit of a process sometimes!! Our latest release is our proudest moment with the boxes designed by Danielle, our graphic designer and missing piece of the puzzle. We reached a point where we needed her expertise to take the branding to the next level. And we are so pleased we found her.
The 3 of us are all on the ‘same page’ with our approach, which makes the collaboration pure joy! Very grateful to work with these 2 ladies.
